What One Does the Other Must Out Do!

Okay boys...enough excitement in our lives!  After a great Mother's Day David still wasn't feeling well and we were up against him having trouble breathing thanks to croup.  So, mommy and David were up most of the night - we tried everything from standing in the cold air, running a steaming bath, to just being held by mommy so David could sleep.  It was a rough night and mommy was exhausted.  I am thinking that Thomas felt left out from all the one on one time David was having with mommy (since he wouldn't leave my arms)....so after getting up and playing in the nursery Thomas took a trip down the stairs. Unfortunately he forgot that he doesn't know how to navigate them yet and face first, head over heals isn't the way!  Mommy got to the stairs just as David started to go down and had to watch as he horrifically slid and tumbled down.  As I ran to the bottom I had to quick scoop him up since David was right behind me heading for the stairs.  I scooped both boys up and did a quick assessment of Thomas - he had quite the bump on his head.  He had gone head first into the square portion of the banister and that had put a small cut in his head, but pushed back his skin so he now had a 1/2 inch raised knot on his head.  He didn't cry much and was soon trying to go back to sleep - mommy worried of a head injury so off we went to the ER for a visit to put mommy's mind at ease.  Now remember...all this happened before 8am on a morning that mommy hasn't slept!  Thankfully Nama Denise rushed over to come with us.  The funniest part about being in the ER was that everyone thought we should have been there for David since his croup sounded terrible.  After some observation Thomas seemed to be doing better and they released us with a "keep an eye on him" statement.  Thankfully Daddy (who had to drive an hour home from work after just getting there) came home to give a tired mommy a hand!  Well, who would have known what the rest of the day had in store for us!

When we got home it was nap time for the busters and mommy.  David didn't sleep well and was continuing to get worse, so we put in a call to the pediatrician and got an appointment for 2pm.  We woke Thomas up just in time to head back out for David's appointment.  It took us less than 10 minutes in the office and a consult by two doctors and they sent us directly to the Emergency Room with David because he was having so much trouble breathing.  Our poor baby!  It was awful to see his stomach and rib cage sucking in so much as he was breathing.  Things went from bad to worse...by the time we got to the hospital he had a temperature of 104 and his breathing was even worse.  We were met by four people, which quickly turned into six and they worked on him quickly.  After more steroids (we had had one at the doctor's office before they would let us go) and a breathing treatment he started to breath easier.  Nama Denise came to our rescue again - she picked up Thomas so mommy and daddy could focus on David and she could keep an eye on Thomas (and keep him away from the stairs!)

Things didn't improve the way the doctor's wanted and they soon admitted David.  Mommy stayed with David and Daddy went home to keep an eye on Thomas.  Our poor sweet boy had to spend his first night away from his brother in a hospital bed.  Both boys missed each other.  I am sure they will be super excited to see each other in the morning.

What a day!  I think we are going to need to have a talk with them about not out doing their brother!!  Days like this make mommy exhausted...but it's all part of life in the Twin Lane!

  1. Wow! What insanity! Croup is scary, especially the first time your baby gets it. You certainly wouldn't know that you have been their Mommy for 3 short months -- you're an old pro! Good job Mommy & Daddy!! Get better David, and Thomas -- if you don't stop going for the stairs, Mommy's going to make you wear a helmet!
